From “Exercisephobic” to Fitness Rebel: Kirstie’s Journey - Customer of the Month
“Kirstie should be aware that a general level of fitness is required for everyday tasks.”
That was just one of many comments from her PE teachers over the years and perhaps the perfect snapshot of why Kirstie grew up with a deep disdain for exercise.
As a child, Kirstie was chubby. As an adult, she became exercisephobic. Fitness wasn’t just unappealing; it felt like an impossible world she didn’t belong in.
But in 2016, everything began to shift.
At the time, Kirstie was in a relationship with someone who liked to tear her down. When she spotted the chance to take part in an 8-week charity boxing event, his dismissive words cut deep:
“Hah, you can’t do that.”
For Kirstie, that phrase sparked her favourite kind of rebellion: “Eff you. Just watch me.”
To prepare, she signed up for a BodyCombat class and that’s where the magic happened.
Instead of judgment and negativity, Kirstie found a fun, supportive fitness instructor and a welcoming community. The music, the encouragement, the laughter, the acceptance, she was hooked.
She went from shyly standing at the back of the room to being a proud FRD: Front Row Diva.
In the whirlwind that followed, her instructor convinced her to train as an instructor herself. Within just 18 months, Kirstie was certified in five programmes, completed her yoga teacher training, and had a handful of freestyle classes under her belt.
For years she’d said, “I’ll teach anything except spin and dance.”
But then came RockFit.
Discovered through TikTok, RockFit was a dance fitness class to rock and metal, Kirstie’s soul music. Her little metalhead heart lit up. Despite not being a dancer, she couldn’t resist. What she lacked in finesse, she made up for in passion.
And that passion became her mission: to find the people who were like her ten years ago.
The misfits. The people who felt uncomfortable in traditional fitness spaces. The shy ones. The weird ones. The ones who weren’t sure if fitness was for them.
Kirstie created Loud Fitness a community designed for the strange and unusual, built by someone who knows exactly how it feels to be on the outside. Her classes combine rock, metal, sweat, and strength in a space where people can move their bodies, build fitness, and learn to love themselves.
For Kirstie, it’s more than just a job. It’s an honour.
Finding a Fitness Identity
Along the way, epic workout gear became part of Kirstie’s confidence and her message.
She can’t quite remember when she first discovered Unwonted Apparel, only that a friend had recommended them. At first, she was sceptical. As someone who lives in gym kit, quality was non-negotiable and in her experience, the funkier the design, the lower the quality.
But then came a sale, and the universe gave her a nudge. She bought a couple of pairs of leggings.
It was love at first fit.
From then on, Kirstie’s colourful hair, tattoos, and bold outfits became an extension of her personality in fitness spaces. With kickass outfits and spooky yoga mats, she had the confidence to launch her own brand and the clothes sparked countless conversations along the way.
“Kit & Lisa have given us gym goths what we never knew we needed,” Kirstie says with gratitude.
Today, she’s not the exercisephobic kid she once was. She’s the loud, unapologetic force behind Loud Fitness proving that fitness doesn’t have to be about perfection, but about passion, community, and strength.
